Nintendo finally opens up the SD card on the Wii

On March 26, 2009, in Nintendo Wii, by Jeff Rivera

In an update that is live now, you can finally play games from the Wii’s SD card slot. The new update will support SD cards up to 32GB, which means you basically can throw countless Virtual Console games on a card and you’ll never have to worry about storage again. IGN has a video up showing how quickly a game boots from the SD card, so take a look.

Pretty cool, as I’d already been up against my storage limits. I was starting to swap games on and off of my SD card, now I can just simply boot right from it. This will also help me to have a cleaner dashboard. I’d say thanks to Nintendo, but this should have been in place at launch. Either way, better late than never…

It’s disappointing that whoever is playing needs to go three rounds to take down Glass Joe, but it’s just fun seeing the game in action.

How could this game be anything but awesome?

Here’s the trailer, and the link to the official site is after the embedded video.

Just so you know, the official site is just showing the trailer, but that’s where a lot of info will be appearing over time. I am a huge fan of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and I really can’t wait to find out more about the sequel. This is going to be a huge holiday hit when it drops in November.

Balance Board support for Punch-Out!!?

On March 25, 2009, in Nintendo Wii, by Jeff Rivera

When the PR came out last week giving new details about Punch-Out!! it sounded like both motion and classic control would be supported for the game, but no mention was made of the Wii Balance Board. Well, it appears that Nintendo’s official site–in Italy–accidentally leaked that support for the rarely used peripheral is indeed in the works. Now this is awesome news, if true.

While I still think I’d prefer classic control to anything else, I’m very happy to hear that Balance Board support is most likely in the game. I always liked boxing in Wii Sports and Wii Fit, even if they were kind of shoehorned into the control scheme. A game that is designed with the Balance Board in mind should interact well and give players a fun way to experience the game in more than one manner. Besides, losing weight with Punch-Out!! sounds much more fun than a lot of alternatives out there.

First Madden ’10 screen is shown

On March 24, 2009, in Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, by Jeff Rivera

On Peter Moore’s official blog, the first Madden ’10 screen has been released. It’s really hard to tell much from a single screen, but it looks pretty nice to me. Peter talks a bit about the game on the blog, so check out the post, here: http://itsinthegame.ea.com/archive/2009/03/23/fight-for-every-yard.aspx

It will be nice when we can get some in-depth details of all of the gameplay tweaks and improvements that are going into this year’s version of the game. The last few years have been pretty disappointing for me, and I’m usually left wondering just how much work goes into the title year to year. At some point, however, EA is going to have to start matching the quality of the releases that we saw during the past generation of consoles, when Madden was really in its prime as a series.

Of all the complete albums that have been released on Rock Band so far, this is by far my most anticipated release. On Tuesday for Xbox 360 owners and Thursday for PS3 owners, Pearl Jam’s Ten will be available for download. For those youngsters that don’t know how great of an album Ten was, hit up your torr–er, uh, Amazon.mp3 and get the album and give it a listen. Nirvana who? Here are the tracks that will be made available either as a whole or individually:

  • Once
  • Even Flow
  • Why Go
  • Black
  • Jeremy
  • Oceans
  • Porch
  • Garden
  • Deep
  • Release
  • Master/Slave
So yeah, download it and enjoy one of the best albums of the ’90s. Just don’t send me the bill when you kick over your subwoofer during the guitar solo in Even Flow.

New Punch-Out!! details emerge from Nintendo

On March 20, 2009, in Nintendo Wii, by Jeff Rivera

A game that I’ve had my eye on since it was announced is the upcoming Punch-Out!! for the Wii. The game looks great, and according to some new info released by Nintendo, it sounds like both waggle fans and old school players will be pleased with the controls for the game. The following is a direct reprint of the Nintendo press release followed by some official art for the game.

One of the biggest names in boxing returns after a 15-year hiatus. Grab a Wii Remote™ controller in one hand and a Nunchuk™ controller in the other and step back into the ring with a modern update of the classic Punch-Out!!

  • Little Mac is back! Everyone’s favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! cast in a modern re-imagination of the series. Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!!games.
  • The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways.

Characters: Little Mac, Glass Joe, King Hippo, Doc Louis, Von Kaiser and other unannounced favorites.

Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Players can obtain special “Star Punches,” which allow Little Mac to take more Health from his rival in a single punch.

Control options:

  • Motion Control (Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers)
Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch.
  • Classic Control (Wii Remote NES™ style)
Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see Nintendo has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge.

We’ll discuss Punch-Out!! a bit more on this week’s episode of The Stupid Gamer podcast. I’m pretty excited about what I’m hearing, as it seems that the cast is going to be the largest of any Punch-Out!! game to date.
