Many of you already picked Metal Gear Solid 4 up at midnight, but since I was rolling in from a concert a little past midnight, I didn’t really have it in me to go out and grab my copy. Anyway, for the less ambitious, today is the day that we’ll be dropping by stores at lunch or during the commute home. To commemorate Solid Snake’s last stand (at least, they’re telling us that it is), I’ve decided to pull together some resources that other sites have been posting and lump them together for your convenience. I don’t typically make you guys deal with a jump, but this time it’s pretty necessary. So, see you on the other side!

The first thing you should do is brush up on your Metal Gear history. Gametrailers has a fantastic Metal Gear Retrospective that covers all the games released in the series, where they fit in the Metal Gear storyline, and who the major (and minor) characters are in each game. This will straighten out most of the confusion you might have about how games fit together to form the overall plot of the series. It’s a six part series, and I’m just going to go ahead and embed all 6 videos right here.

Joystiq did a great overview of the characters in the series, and it’s a quick read. It’s a straightforward and spoiler-free look at what we’re dealing with heading into MGS 4. Have a look here: http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgs4-need-to-know/855739/

For the ultimate in all MGS 4 resources, check out the mega thread on the Gaming Age forums. Be warned, however, this is one massive thread with pictures, massive amounts of info, and any little thing you could ever need or want to know about the game. Jumping into this link is no small undertaking. Thankfully, the thread is spoiler-free, and people have been warned not to discuss spoilers or risk being banned from the site. If you have ANY questions at all about MGS 4, your answers will be found here.

For anybody out there that isn’t experienced with the series, I’d suggest checking these sites out and seeing if it piques your interest. While I feel that Metal Gear doesn’t always have the best gameplay around, it has provided some of the best gaming experiences the industry has ever produced. Even if you don’t ever play the games, just reading up on them or catching video documentaries and retrospectives is quite interesting.

I watched a friend of mine play through the first arc. I really, really want a PS3 so I can play myself.

Anyone want to buy me one?

    Pretty please? *puppy dog eyes*
