I fly solo this week as I was unable to get in touch with Miguel and Stephen to record the show. I know, it’s a shame, but this is better than nothing, right? Well, maybe not, but you should listen to it anyway. Man, I say “definitely” a lot. It’s definitely too much. Oh, and sorry about the hard swallows, I have a sore throat and cough, so I had to fight those off constantly.
Show notes:

  • Super Mario Galaxy leaked to torrents already
  • End of quarter MS, Sony, Nintendo loss/gains
  • PSP Slim impressions
  • Discussion (how can you have a discussion with only one guy?): Atmospheric games
  • Game Recommendation
  • What I’ve been playing
  • Pleading and rambling for comments/feedback/suggestions. It’s almost begging, but best described as babbling.
  • Note: The full version of the intro music can be found here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lnedHQEGKmg

You can download the show here, or stream it with the nifty media player!

Wow, I rarely have a reason to thank Sony, but I received a voucher in the mail for a free (yep, free!) Daxter PSP pack. I’m not sure if I’m getting the pack as a result of my affiliation with Advanced Media Network, or if it’s for some other reason, but I’ll be sure to enjoy it either way.

I sold my PSP earlier this year as it had hit a massive release drought, but this time around I think I’ll hang onto it as the upcoming release schedule is quite excellent.

Many members of the industry have been quietly pushing Capcom’s Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure as a must-have title for the Wii. The boys over at IGN have been running a “Buy Zack & Wiki” campaign, and now 1up’s review has come in with glowing results (9.0). While I had expected good things from the title, it’s starting to look like it’s a game that I simply can’t pass on.

Thanks for the image, IGN.

So what’s the game all about? Basically the game is a point and click puzzler. It’s something that I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of on the Wii, but I’m sure that it will spawn a whole bunch of similar titles, especially if it’s successful. The press is touting the puzzle and level design as imaginative and challenging. I don’t typically get caught up in hype trains and movements, but it seems that there might just be something there for this game. We’ll know if it lives up to the hype as more reviews come rolling in and the game hits shelves soon.

For those that have been sucked into the Guitar Hero phenomenon, they know that louder is better. Brad, of Knievel Kustoms has created his latest masterpiece in a long line of inspirational projects and has shown them off at the BYOAC forums. Take a look at what he’s built as an homage to one of gaming’s hottest franchises. More details follow the pics.

In his own words, Knievel describes the make up of this Marshall stack inspired bit of awesomeness:

The cabinet is actually 3 cabinets that can be separated for transporting, if there’s a better party somewhere.

The 3 are..

The Bottom -houses the heavy-hittin’ Logitech Z2300 Sub and my PS2 with all the Guitar Hero titles loaded on the HD

The Center -is the 27″ flat-screen Toshiba CRT TV

The Head -has the Logitech L/R speakers and a backlit GH marquee

Most of the parts used are actual Marshall pieces purchased from an online Amp Parts store.

Now if you’ll excuse me.. I’ve got some shreddin’ to do.

You can see a couple of additional photos and his announcement on the BYOAC forums here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72311.0

So the wife and I moved into a new home last week and one of the first things we got set up was our home arcade. For the past 6 months or so I’ve been collecting, fixing, and selling arcades, but the only place I could store them in our 2-bedroom condo was in the garage. Now that we’re in a 6 bedroom house, I was able to dedicate a room to the cause. So, here are some pics of the room (details of the arcade follow the pictures).

The arcade consists of:

  • Donkey Kong - fully restored
  • Asteroids - 90% restored (needs a little work on the control panel paint)
  • Ms. Pac-Man - 100% restored (will still do a cap kit on the monitor though)
  • Jurassic Park pinball machine - 100% original in A+ condition
  • Neo Geo MVS 4-slot system in a Japanese Candy Cab. Games include:
    • Metal Slug
    • Metal Slug 2
    • Metal Slug X
    • Metal Slug 3
    • Metal Slug 4
    • Metal Slug 5
    • Samurai Showdown II
    • Ghost Pilots
    • Ninja Combat
    • Aero Fighters 2
    • Strikers 1945 Plus
    • Garou Mark of the Wolves
    • Puzzle Bobble
    • Magical Drop III
    • Baseball Stars 2
    • Shock Troopers
    • King of the Monsters 2
    • SNK vs Capcom SVC Chaos
    • Neo Mr. Do
    • Andro Dunos
    • Blazing Star
    • …more on the way
  • MAME cabinet w/ 25″ horizontal display, 2 player setup, spinner, trackball, and thousands of games (you name it, it’s on the machine)

The green tint you see to everything is due to the lighting I have. I have both a black light and green fluorescent bulb in the arcade. In person it looks great, especially with the dark blue paint on the walls. I still have room for some more cabinets, but right now I’m happy with it as it is. If the right game pops up in local listings however, we’ll see…

A video clip of a short walk through the arcade is available here (1 minute 8 seconds): http://youtube.com/watch?v=6wzsT7SuJdc

Sorry for the shaky footage. I was using a digital camera, and they aren’t the most stable things in the world to film with.
