Show notes:

  • More of a test run than anything else
  • A little rough
  • Just under 19 minutes long, 15MB in size, in mp3 format
  • Japanese sales discussed briefly
  • Thoughts on PS3, Wii, 360 console war
  • Looking for a name for the show…give me suggestions
  • Participation question: What are your gaming rituals?
  • Email feedback to jar155 [at] gmail dot com
  • Go ahead and use the comments on this post for feedback as well

Feel free to be as harsh as you want to be in your criticisms. I recorded the show on the fly without a script or a plan. I made it through ok based on past podcasting experience; expect fututre shows to be MUCH better than this one. PLEASE PARTICIPATE in the conversation. It will make the upcoming episodes so much better. It worked well for the podcast I used to produce, it should work well here.

It’s getting harder and harder to comment on the sales charts. Nintendo is selling as much as they can produce of the DS Lite and plenty of Wii systems. The 360 is constantly in the dumps, and the PS3 sales are sluggish at best. I really wonder if games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are going to be too little too late for the PS3. Japan may already be won by Nintendo by the end of the year.

According to Frank O’Connor of Bungie, Halo 3’s final graphics will be much better than those found in the beta test. O’Connor stated that there is still a lot of polishing going on and that the final graphics will be much more complete than they are now.

Up until now fans haven’t had any major complaints about the beta except for the incremental graphical leap over Halo 2. With the promise of improved graphics, Halo fans should be pretty excited about how Halo 3 is shaping up. I’ve still yet to chime in on my thoughts on the beta, but that is coming soon.

cathect:
tr.v. ca·thect·ed, ca·thect·ing, ca·thects
To invest emotional energy in (a person, object or idea).

I’ve never really liked selling my videogame stuff, no matter how little I used it. Eventually, however, I learned to be a bit more budget-minded with my hobby, and I was forced to start unloading some of my collection.

Lately, I’ve been getting into arcade collecting and restoring. While it’s not the world’s most expensive hobby, it costs just enough that you’ll eventually have to start flipping some of the cabinets you pick up in order to get new ones. Today, I was able to get over my emotional attachment to the first cabinet I ever purchased: a Bubble Bobble game in what I thought was a repainted Pac-Man cabinet. The game is one of my all-time favorites, and a hit with the wife. I picked up the cabinet initially because I was going to gut it, and use it to make a dedicated Pac-Man. Upon closer inspection, however, I found that the cabinet was an old Rally-X cabinet, and not a Pac-Man cab. For me, a bit of a purist, it wasn’t going to cut it. I stripped the paint off the cabinet, repainted it, and made it a pretty nice Bubble Bobble cabinet. Upon sharing this with the BYOAC community, I found that the Bubble Bobble game was in high demand. While I was a fan, I felt that maybe I should put the cab into the hands of a true enthusiast.

So just after work I met with the man who will be picking my cabinet up Saturday morning. He played the machine, admired it’s clean and solid condition, and offered me $300. While I could get more for it, he seemed so happy to have found the game he’d been looking to own since the mid-80’s. I did turn a $100 profit on the deal, but it was the exchange itself that was so satisfying. I’m sad to see it go, but I guess it’s part of the hobby.

The extra money is going to go into restoring a Donkey Kong cabinet that I picked up locally. I’ll post pictures of that process as it comes along.

A couple of videos for Guitar Hero 3 popped up on YouTube earlier this evening. Here you go, enjoy! My Name is Jonas is a master track recording while Slow Ride is a cover. The game is looking much like we have come to know, but there are some differences that fans will notice.

My Name is Jonas: http://youtube.com/watch?v=A_3Dpp2lwhQ

Slow Ride: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Olvch5sKdCM

Can this Fall come soon enough?

Edit: The original source of the videos was IGN.

Sorry everybody, but I had to get some ads running on the site that had a chance of generating some sort of revenue. If I’m going to continue to expand the scope of the site, I’m going to need some funds to do so. Right now I’m using more bandwidth than I planned (breaking a few big stories can do that to you), and if I’m going to start integrating more media into the site, it’s going to start costing me.

If the ads are a major turn off for you, please let me know. You could always adblock them using a Firefox plugin. I would, however, be much happier if you supported the site’s sponsors. Some of the products advertised here are actually pretty cool.

So again, I apologize for the ads. I know that they dirty up the site’s design a bit, but it’s a necessary thing moving forward. If things work out well, and the ads perform better than expected, maybe I can scale them back in the future.

Adam Mapleson, a 24-yr. old gamer was shot yesterday in the chest while coming to the aid of a woman who was being robbed by two gunmen. Adam saw what was going on and tackled one of the woman’s assailants. In the scuffle, Adam was shot in the chest, which has landed him in the hospital. A witness at the scene said that blood was everywhere. Both of the robbers ran after the fight, but Adam’s involvement possibly saved others from danger.

Adam is hospitalized and listed in serious but stable condition.

I’m looking into making some changes with the blog. Some will be noticeable, some won’t be. The changes are to help me achieve a few goals, including:

  • Making the site profitable
  • Establishing a better foothold in the industry
  • Score more content and interviews from developers and publishers
  • Prepare the site to handle game giveaways and contests
  • Improve navigation for the readers
  • Possibly starting the Stupid Gamer podcast

There are other things I hope to achieve with the changes I’m making. If you run into errors or anything weird, just know that it’s all part of my attempts to improve the site. Also, look for the possibility for this blog to maybe expand into a full-blown game coverage site someday. That, however, is still further down the line…

Edit: I’ve got things looking dandy in Firefox, but IE is a whole different beast. The site is looking like garbage in IE…ridiculous.

Next-gen is reporting that Halo 2’s delays can be partially blamed on nudity. Yeah, that’s right…nudity. Apparently an error code in the game was accompanied with the picture of a man mooning a camera. It’s nothing graphic, but after the infamous “hot coffee” debacle that landed Rockstar in so much trouble, Bungie isn’t taking chances with the ESRB or with headhunting lawyers like Jack Thompson.

It’s becoming the same old thing every week: Nintendo dominates and Sony slips a couple of titles into the mix. It’s incredible that the DS can continue to sell at this rate. By the time it’s all said and done, the DS should easily become the best-selling game platform of all time in Japan (and possibly worldwide).
